Butler-Cohen Design + Build Safety Award

On an active jobsite, one of our crews found a single failed pin on a rigging component before a pick. They stopped the lift. Nobody had to approve it and nobody had to argue about the schedule — stopping was the right call, so the crew made it.

The general contractor on that project, Butler-Cohen Design + Build, recognized the crew with the Butler-Cohen Design + Build Safety Award for proactive action and safe operations. It is not an award anyone applies for. It came from a GC who watched our people choose the safe call over the fast one.

What we do on every lift

  • Pre-lift plans

    Load path, ground conditions, rigging configuration, and exclusion zones agreed before the hook moves.

  • Daily rigging inspections

    Slings, shackles, pins, and hardware inspected every day and pulled from service the moment anything is questionable.

  • Stop-work authority for every hand

    Any crew member — apprentice to foreman — can stop the job. No permission required, no pushback afterward.

  • Job hazard analyses (JHAs)

    Written per task and reviewed with the crew at the start of the shift, updated as the work or the site changes.

Credentials

NCCCO-certified crane operators and OSHA-trained ironworkers on every crew, working inside the general contractor's site-specific safety plan.

Daily pre-task planning

Every crew starts the shift with a documented task plan covering the sequence, the lift, and the exposure.

100% tie-off at height

Fall protection is enforced on every connection, deck, and joist-setting operation — no exceptions.

Rigging and lift review

Picks are reviewed with the crane operator before the hook moves. Load path, ground conditions, and exclusion zones are set in advance.

Toolbox talks and incident review

Weekly toolbox talks in the field, plus review of any near-miss so the correction reaches every crew.

Qualified crew leadership

Each crew runs under an experienced foreman responsible for safety, sequence, and quality on that structure.

General-contractor integration

7S works inside the GC's site-specific safety plan and reports through the project's required systems.
